WW2 TOP Military Orders
EXTRAORDINARY and IMMENSE Group to Marshal of the Soviet Union Kirill Moskalenko. Includes 6 of his Soviet military orders and 9 decorations of other Communist Bloc countries. Represented among the Soviet awards are the most important military decorations of the USSR: an Order of Suvorov, 1st cl., two Orders of Kutuzov, 1st cl., and two Orders of Lenin. Collection of documents comprises 16 ID cards, 29 personalized greetings, 36 award documents and 31 photos and photo illustrations from his personal archive. Included are also several high quality personalized presentation articles from Marshal Moskalenko's estate.

All Soviet orders are in excellent condition. Order of Suvorov 1st cl. and both Orders of Kutuzov 1st cl. come with certificate of authenticity by Paul McDaniel, author of "The Comprehensive Guide to Soviet Orders and Medals". Condition rating on all three is very high: 8 out of 10.

Kirill Moskalenko volunteered for the Red Army in 1920, when he was 18 years of age. He distinguished himself during the Civil War and was sent to commanders school. For much of the 1920s, he served in the Cavalry rising from platoon commander to regiment chief of staff. In the 30s, he furthered his military education and by 1938 was given command of an artillery brigade. In 1939 Kirill Moskalenko participated in the war against Finland as commander of artillery in a rifle division. In August 1940 Moskalenko was promoted to major general following his participation in the Red Army's annexation of Bessarabia.

From the start of the war against Germany Moskalenko quickly advanced through the ranks and by the time the battle for Stalingrad commenced he was commander of the 1st Guards Army in the battle to hold that city, and led several bold counterattacks southwest of Stalingrad.

In October 1942 – October 1943 he commanded the 40th Army which played major role during the Battle of Kursk, 1943 offensive in the Ukraine and the battles for the Dnieper line

From October 1943 until the end of the war in Europe Moskalenko commanded the 38th Army. In his push towards the Carpathian mountains, he lead the 38th Army in battles around Kiev, and captured several major cities in western Ukraine. The most notable action was the breakthrough at the Dukla pass into the fiercely defended Nazi Protectorate of Slovakia, on October 6, 1944. Following that spectacular breakthrough, the 38th Army swept into the Moravskaya Ostrava region of Czechoslovakia and triumphantly ended the war in Prague, the last Nazi bastion in Europe (see our photo section for a photo album of the liberation of Prague).

In 1953 Moskalenko was given command of Moscow Military District. In this capacity he played prime role in the Kremlin coup-de-tat following the death of Stalin. He was one of the members of Khruschev's squad of Soviet generals who were sent to arrest Beria, the infamous chief of Soviet secret police and probably the most feared person in the Soviet Union. According to several eyewitness accounts and his own published memoirs it was none other than Moskalenko who put the pistol to Beria's head and ordered him to raise his hands (while Zhukov searched him for weapons). His loyalty to Khruschev during this daring action against Beria, as well as his prior service during the war earned Moskalenko the rank of Marshal of the Soviet Union in 1955.

In 1960-62 Moskalenko commanded the newly formed Soviet strategic rocket forces. During this time he was instrumental in the development of ever more powerful nuclear weapons. He also contributed leadership to the Soviet manned space program (Note: one of the photos in the group shows him sitting at the table between Kruschev and Korolev, chief Soviet space designer, with Gagarin and several other first Soviet cosmonauts during a pre-flight conference). In 1962 Moskalenko became Deputy Minister of Defense. He stayed on active duty in the military until his death in June 1985.
